It’s that time of year, and you might be wondering what to get that special graduate who’s in your life. After all, it’s not every day that someone graduates, especially if they’ve earned their doctorate! Years of hard work, dedication, and persistence have paid off, and they’re ready to enter the next phase of their lives. So what to get the grad? Here are some of our favorite ideas.

A nice watch. To commemorate this next adventure of theirs, why not get them a nice watch they can wear to job interviews and on the job? It doesn’t have to be super expensive, but if they’ve spent most of their grad school career using their phone as a watch, or wearing a sports watch, they’ll appreciate a professional-looking watch that adds polish to their look.

A new laptop. They’ve spent the last few years glued to their screens, researching, writing, and revising – their laptop has surely taken a beating. A new laptop for all the forthcoming work they’ll be doing will be put to good use.

Coffee/Espresso Maker. Just because they don’t have to go to class or work on their dissertation doesn’t mean they won’t still need caffeine – and buying coffee at coffee shops can add up quickly. A coffee or espresso maker, paired with some bags of their favorite coffee will certainly be appreciated.

Mail-order memberships. There are so many from which to choose – meal prep options that help save time with cooking, monthly subscriptions of shaving goodies or makeup, monthly surprise book boxes, or things like grocery delivery memberships. If your grad is in a job that has long hours, they’ll appreciate delivery options of necessities and/or treats.

A massage gift certificate, spa day, or some movie passes. Graduation gifts don't have to break the bank. Chances are, your graduate hasn't spent much time pampering themselves or doing "fun" things, especially in that last year of dissertation work. Give them a gift certificate for a massage, a spa day, or even just some movie passes so they can see some movies and relax.

A new suitcase or work bag. The old beat-up backpack or tote bag won’t cut it in the job world, and a graduate can always use work-appropriate clothes or accessories when they’re just starting out. Find out what works for them – some people prefer rolling suitcases; others prefer professional backpacks, while still others like the traditional suitcase – and treat them to a new bag!

Gym membership or passes to their favorite fitness class. This might seem silly, but it’s actually really practical. Starting a new job can be stressful, and working out is a great way to relieve stress and stay healthy. A gym membership or passes to their favorite fitness class will help them with stress reduction and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

A gift card to Thesis Editor! Did you know we offer gift cards? Your graduate’s dissertation might be done, but why not get them a gift card to DE to help them turn their dissertation into a book, get assistance with their resume or CV, or help them with developing a journal article for submission? I was at the end of my PhD in History when I came to thesis editor. I had a very specific problem in relation to the formatting of footnotes in a thesis that contained multiple landscape pages and thus multiple section breaks. The editor who worked on my thesis demonstrated an exceptional level of expertise in formatting, resolving my problem and explaining to me exactly what was done. My thesis was returned to me in good time, and I now have the PhD. I am very grateful to thesis editor for having helped me in the crucial final stages of the PhD, and would thus highly recommend their services to prospective clients.
