Tomorrow is World Poetry Day! Why world poetry day? Poetry is universal, it crosses cultures and generations and reminds us of our shared humanity. The first WPD was declared in 1999 by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) to be a holiday, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.” UNESCO recognized that poetry is able to “capture the creative spirit of the human mind.” Today is a day where we should not only learn about poetry and recognize its importance, but also encourage ourselves and others to appreciate poetry more, for example, by teaching it, sharing it, and bringing it into the public eye.
You might be familiar with poets that you’ve learned about in school, like Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, ee cummings, Sylvia Plath, and Maya Angelou. But what about the ones you haven’t learned about in school? What about poets who aren’t in traditional English syllabi? There’s a whole world of poets out there, and it’s easier than ever to read their work.
Here are some poets to check out:
